Education for Foreigners

Basic education (comprehensive school) is free of charge all-round education. Every child residing permanently in Finland is obliged to attend school. This also applies to immigrant children/teenagers residing permanently in Finland.

A student moving to Jyväskylä should register with the Education Services of the City of Jyväskylä at the address Kilpisenkatu 1, Third floor, 40100 Jyväskylä. Contact person, Pia Bärlund: tel. +358 40 5455257.

For the first year, the student studies in a preparatory education group separately allocated to him or her, after which he or she continues at the school located nearest to his or her home. Students entering the school in the middle of the year are forwarded to study in a preparatory education group suitable for them.

Basic education is provided in Finnish (exceptions include English and Swedish, see Section 2.3). If the native language of the student is not Finnish, the student will study Finnish according to the curriculum for foreign students (Finnish as a second language).

In all subjects, the student can be provided with particular remedial education for immigrants for four years after immigrating to Finland.

The students who apply for the English-speaking classes should have an age appropriate proficiency in English and an adequate proficiency in Finnish. The students who don´t speak Finnish, will first attend the preparatory instuction organized by th City of Jyväskylä.

Homework clubs are organised to help the students with their homework.

In Jyväskylä, the education services of the City of Jyväskylä are responsible for providing basic education. Jyväskylä Christian School, the Rudolf Steiner School, and the Jyväskylä Teacher Training School are also located in Jyväskylä.
